You may remember I posted a list of my 10 Favorite ways to Entertain my kids using my Library Card. Well I thought it would be fun to do a series to demonstrate just how we do this in our house.
The first one on my list is our latest favorite thing to do which is check out Audio Books or books on cd. In the photo above you will see what the section looks like at our local library. It is located on this top shelf in the children’s section of the library. My daughter just pulls a foot stool up and browses through until she is able to find something that interests her. This is what she chose for this week:
She chose The Mouse and the Motorcycle and Anne of Avonlea. The way we do it in our house is when lights go out at bedtime I let her listen to 30 minutes of her book on cd then I come in and turn it off. This works great as she gets exposed to lots of books this way and I also find that it helps her to settle down and be ready to close her eyes to rest for the night.
This is what works for us. I have a friend that says her daughter prefers to listen to books on cd while she is taking a bath. This may be even fun to just turn on in the background while kids are playing with Legos on the floor. My kids love to listen to books they have already read that are favorites. They say it is just fun to listen to someone else read it or just get to hear their favorite story all over again. I’m not quite sure how many times we have rechecked The Lightning Thief from our local library.
Just so you know the audio books are not limited to children’s books either. There are also adult books. I recently listened to The Host by Stephanie Meyer. It is a fun thing to do while on long car rides. Just like books to read there a quite a few options for audio books as well. You can choose your favorite fictional story from romance to mystery. Or you can choose to pick some self help books such as learning more about your finances or maybe even new diets to help give your New Year’s resolution a kick start. I have been personally perusing the autobiographies thinking it would be fun to listen to some of these author’s tell about their own lives and hearing it from their own voice!
Would love to hear your thoughts on audio books. Have you given them a try for yourself or your children?

I highly recommend listening to “The Help” on Audio CD. It has different women read each part, and it brought the book to life long before the movie came out.
OH I am going to reserve that today, thanks so much for sharing!
Hi Abby!
We love the library! I have to add playaways to the list! You’re books look like they’re from TPL and they added those maybe a year ago. They have both adults and kids books and are very portable. You might not be far from a Ling county library and TPU has a reciprocal agreement with them and you’re eligible for their card, to widen your choices. We like to listen to audiobooks in the van and the kids have gotten some good exposure- and they get to practice their narration skills when Troy wants to know what he missed. My Percy Jackson lover has also liked The Book of Three (series), Ella Enchanted and other Gail Carson Levine’s, City of Ember series and the Dealing With Dragons series. Before the baby came we listened to almost all of Swiss Family Robinson-it’s long! Jim Weiss has some bedtime CD’s you’re girls might like, too.
